The Maritime Odyssey Preschool
Our Preschool Checklist
The Maritime Odyssey Preschool has received national attention for our high-quality methods of teaching preschool subjects. Our approach to early childhood education is established around the following “Core Values,” ones that continue to shape the culture of our school and prepare our students for the future.
Here at the Maritime Odyssey Preschool, more than 90% of the preschool students have shown improvement in at least 3 or more areas of the Preschool Early Literacy Indicator (PELI), a storybook-embedded assessment of essential pre-literacy and oral language skills needed for kindergarten. The PELI is designed for preschool students ages 3-5 and measures alphabet knowledge, vocabulary and oral language, phonemic awareness, and listening comprehension.
The preschool uses Big Day for Pre-K, Creative Curriculum, Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards as well as Next Generation Science Standards (K) as foundational learning tools for its students. In addition, preschoolers visit an in- house science lab each week and travel to the Maritime Aquarium 8 times a year to enhance their learning.
Here at Odyssey, we foster community as the first step to education. Our experienced staff are coached by aquarium educators to implement marine life and the aquarium’s live animal collection to inspire in literacy, math and social studies. Our students are taught to have an appreciation for all forms of life, including animal subjects, teachers, and their fellow classmates.
